Full disclosure, I ordered the Fitbit Charge HR only after I gave up on Jawbone fulfilling my preorder for the Up3 and once I realized the Fitbit Surge was like having a VCR strapped to your wrist. Further complicating my decision was the reviews that were all over the place on Amazon. Either people loved it or they thought it was the biggest piece of crap ever. I am writing this review to try and offer a realistic perspective for those looking to buy the Fitbit Charge HR.First, disregard the reviews from all the "personal trainers" and "hardcore" gym goers out there. It"s amazing how everyone becomes a trainer or gym rat when reviewing a piece of workout equipment. Wrist based heart rate monitoring is still in its infancy and if, and I stress if, you are so hardcore that a possible 5-10 beat variation is so critical then you need to stay with chest based HR monitoring for awhile. The Charge HR isn"t for that. Not to mention, I haven"t seen that it is off like others have said. I was skeptical and I have a Garmin Running GPS watch with a chest HR strap and I see the two being pretty consistent.Second, I cannot stress enough the quality of the Fitbit app and web based dashboard. They are motivational and intuitive and they give you goals to shoot for. I have yet to see any sync issues or any of the other nonsense I have seen in other reviews. Finally, $150 is a lot of money but it less than other comparable products out there. To me this is the perfect entry level device. If you like the concept and are disciplined, then you can upgrade to another device. if you are trying to get a snapshot of what you are doing on a daily basis and how you can make some life and fitness improvements, this device is a perfect way in.Read more ›

I was lucky enough to have received the Fitbit Charge HR prior to it"s scheduled release. In 2014 wearable technology has been the craze. I"ve been using the Fitbit Flex because our hospital was providing a subsidy to help the employees get fit. Now the Flex is not the best wearable. I currently have the Pebble, Moto 360 and I"ve used the Samsung Gear Live and Basis. The Flex by far is the most convenient one to use. But the Flex does have it"s limitations and issues with the battery. So when the Charge HR was announced, I was extremely excited to see what it can provide. Compared to the Flex, it is twice the thickness and the strap is now a buckle. So far I"ve been impressed with the results of the Charge HR. I"ll list the pros and cons.Pros:Auto Sleep Log: Much more convenient than having to start and stop on the Flex. I don"t always fall asleep when I logged it with the Flex so having the Charge HR start it when I actually fall asleep is great.Logging Exercise: I love the ability to log each workout session. With the Flex I felt that my strength training sessions were lost because they weren"t constant hand swinging movements. I can also better track how long my workout sessions were. This leads into my next pro.HR Monitor:The HR Monitor is a constant and checks your resting heart rate vs when you are active. This is great for calculating your caloric burn and if you want to see where your fat burning zone is. I think this provides a great tool to track your workouts more accurately.Stair Counter:This is a great motivator to take the stairs. I was taking the stairs with the Flex but it didn"t capture that accurately. I go up 6 flights of stairs to my office at least 3 times a day and would like credit for that.Read more ›

I was skeptical of the HR tracking based on the reviews, as this was the primary reason that I wanted this product. I run, lift weights and do high intensity interval training every day. After playing around with position and tightness, the Charge HR has consistently measured my HR accurately at rest, during moderate exercise and during high intensity exercise, including heart rates up to 162 bpm during hill intervals. I wear the Charge HR on my non dominant hand, left, about 2-3 fingers width up from my wrist bone, moderately tight. I tighten it further during intense exercise and loosen it slightly for sleep and normal wearing. It has consistently measured my heart rate during sleep also. My heart rate readings are similar to what I"ve gotten with other measurements including chest strap. I find myself being more mindful about my calorie intake as I"ve been logging my eating and drinking and comparing it to my calorie burn. The run tracking with the iPhone is similar to what I"ve gotten with run keeper. Very happy so far.
