Topical Analgesic Rubs: How they work

The three most frequently utilized ingredients in analgesic rubs are methyl salicylate, menthol, and capsaicin. These ingredients are capable of penetrating the skin and spreading throughout the muscles and joints. Each chemical works uniquely and has its own effect. These substances have been approved by the FDA for temporary relief of minor pain.

Methyl salicylate is an anti inflammatory, chemically related to Aspirin. Methyl salicylate is the ester of salicylic acid and methanol, while Aspirin is the ester of salicylic acid and acetic acid. Aspirin is now entirely synthetic, but was traditionally processed from Willow bark. Methyl salicylate is often extracted from Birch bark and Wintergreen, but is commonly synthesized for commercial use. Just like Aspirin, Methyl salicylate is effective due to its ability to inhibit COX-1 and COX-2 enzymes. These are the enzymes that catalyze production of the prostaglandin hormones responsible for causing inflammation and pain. Unlike Aspirin, Methyl Salicylate creates a pleasant local warming sensation and does not harm the stomach or intestines. It is important to know that Methyl salicylate can be over applied and result in toxic side effects or over dose. Follow product directions carefully and reconsider using Methyl salicylate if you are already taking Aspirin or have impaired liver or kidney function.

Menthol is said to be a mild kappa opioid receptor agonist. Opioids work by binding to a receptor site, resulting in decreased perception of pain. It is often extracted from Peppermint, but is also commonly synthesized. Menthol is able to trigger the bodies TRPM8 receptors, which cause the sensation of being cold. Many people report to enjoy the cooling sensation of Menthol and the warming sensation of Methyl salicylate.

Capsaicin is thought to work by interfering with sensory neurons. Capsaicin is extracted from peppers and causes a heating sensation when applied. It is often reported that the sensation caused by Capsaicin is irritating and relatively unpleasant, though it may be more effective for some types of pain.

The next time you are suffering from muscle or joint pain, it may be wise to consider the benefits of using a quality topical analgesic vs taking an oral medication. There is a catch however as these amazing pain relievers are accompanied by odors. Avoid the lingering odors by using a thin product that allows the smell to quickly dissipate and the ingredients to rapidly absorb.

Relief Finally!

By Lakeside on November 13, 2011

I have arthritis in my neck. I went to the chiropractor, used heat packs, cold packs, tried every rub I could find. I saw Arth Arrest and thought I might as well try it, too. Ahhh relief! I wish it were sold in more stores. Can only be found at Walgreen’s. Then I discovered Amazon and found I could buy it online.

Thank you!

Pain relief lotion

This product glides on from a roll on top like a deodorant so is easy to apply. It heats up and gives a pleasant warmth which penetrates and gives relief from pain and discomfort. So far I have used it on my lower back and knees and am very pleased with it.

Great Mother of Pearl!

By Robert on October 27, 2012

This stuff works great. I had my wife apply it to a pulled shoulder muscle and within seconds, I forgot all about that pesky muscle & neck issue BECAUSE I WAS ON FIRE!

It was a welcome distraction from the neck and shoulder pain and allowed me to carry on with the yard work. Mission accomplished. Try to follow the directions on the bottle. Not sure if I would have slatherd it on like I did if I tried a test area first. Still, it works and does settle down after awhile. My wife did not have the same “heat” reaction that I experienced. She says it’s working great.

We will be buying more when this bottle runs out. It Works!
