I received the FitBit Surge as part of FitBit’s early limited release. I purchased it directly from FitBit on December 5, and received it on December 8th. UPDATE: My original review was made after one week of use with the Surge. I’ve gone through and updated every section of this review after over a month of use.

I was absolutely in love with the previous Fitbit Force that I had

I was invited to order the Fitbit Surge through the early release. I was absolutely in love with the previous Fitbit Force that I had, but the thought of getting the chance to collect MORE data from my workouts had me screaming “take my damn money” to Fitbit. I placed an order no less than 30 seconds after receiving the pre-order email.

I’ll preface this by saying I am not a novice exerciser. I am a certified trainer and I work out REALLY HARD. Like SUPER INTENSE.

I bring this up because if anyone is really giving this device a go, you can rest assured that I am putting this thing to the test.

I won’t do a pro and cons, but rather list what I didn’t like about it and what I found out through field testing. I am having a hard time trying to be hard on Fitbit because I am considering this early release to be a BETA for the rest of you folks.

When I received the Fitbit Surge, I nearly popped a blood vessel with excitement with trying to open the damn packaging. It took about 15 minutes to get this thing up and running. Note: you will need to decommission your old tracker device (fitbit force, etc.) before you get this to sync. I let it charge for about 45 minutes since mine came with about half charge (this thing charges SUPER fast). If you want to be able to tell battery life on the device itself, you have to press the left button once.

Then, I put the tracker on my arm, and within about 20 seconds I got some heart rate data. My pants were shrinking by the second.

My initial comment I would make about the Surge is that the first screen only tells time, rather than showing time, heart rate and steps at the same time. That would really help having to swipe back and forth. This is likely a really simple software issue to resolve for Fitbit.
